Shaping Futures: Our Journey as Adjunct Professors at UMES
The Spring 2025 semester marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for us as adjunct professors at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Stepping into the classroom and studio, we were filled with anticipation, eager to share our passion for ceramics with a new generation of artists. What we didn’t expect was how deeply inspiring this journey would be—not just for our students, but for us as well. Their creativity, dedication, and relentless curiosity have enriched our own artistic perspectives in ways we never imagined.
UMES, nestled in the heart of Princess Anne, Maryland, is a distinguished historically Black land-grant research university. Renowned for its commitment to academic excellence and cultural diversity, UMES offers a wealth of programs that foster innovation and creativity. The Department of Fine Arts, in particular, stands out for its unique offerings, including the only Sequential Arts degree in Maryland, which encompasses comic book art and computer graphics. This innovative curriculum, combined with passionate faculty and a focus on hands-on learning, makes it one of the most respected art schools in the state.
Our ceramics classes take place in the state-of-the-art Art & Technology Center, a space where traditional artistry meets modern technology. The center provides an environment that encourages students to explore and expand their creative boundaries.
Each four-hour, nonstop class session seems to fly by as we delve into the intricacies of ceramics. The dedication and creativity our students bring to the studio are truly remarkable. Their eagerness to learn and experiment serves as a constant reminder of the transformative power of education and art. Witnessing their growth and the evolution of their unique artistic voices is a reward beyond measure.
As adjunct professors, we are honored to contribute to the rich tapestry of UMES’s academic community. The university’s emphasis on blending traditional art forms with new technologies aligns perfectly with our teaching philosophy. This synergy not only enhances the learning experience for our students but also invigorates our own artistic practices.
Looking ahead, we are thrilled to continue this incredible journey into the Fall 2025 semester. With each new class, we remain committed to sharing our knowledge, inspiring young artists, and pushing the boundaries of creative expression. As we prepare for another semester at UMES, our passion for teaching burns brighter than ever, and we can’t wait to return to the classroom, ready to shape and be shaped by the artists of the future.
